ADHD Tour - Drugs Therapies
4. Drugs and Other Therapies
No other therapy seems to have the fast success offered by Tri Plan
A global epidemic - and drugs are not safeAmphetamine-like chemicals are commonly given such as Ritalin, Concerta, Concerta LP, Adderall, Adderall XR, Vyvanse, Methylphenidate, Dexedrine, Cylert or norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitors, such as Straterra or Atomexetine. Drugs make children more docile, so adults’ lives are easier.
Serious researched side effects of drugs include a slowing down of emotional development, stomach aches and headaches, retarded growth, nausea, allergic reactions, feeling less sociable, sense of not feeling authentically themselves, and mental disorders. Parents may feel guilty.
Drugs do not improve learning. Benefits may only last while the person takes the drug.
In the UK it is now recommended drugs are, “not the first treatment for school-age children and young people with ADHD”. (NICE, National Institute for Clinical Excellence ADHD Guidelines 2008)
Psychology
Evidence shows psychological interventions have moderate beneficial effects on ADHD symptoms and conduct problems, and have very high direct and indirect costs.
Other therapies
Other therapies often considered include parent training, education programs, diets, and exercises.
